Uni

$15.00

The original painting was exhibited in both shows “Tiny” in December 2018 and “Alphabet Soup” in May 2019 at STUDIO Gallery. It was purchased by Palette in Fall of 2019 to be displayed at a new location TBA.

I first painted purple urchins as part of an ocean mural by Salesforce in partnership with the PangeSeed Foundation for the Global Climate Action Conference atop the SF Transit Center in Fall of 2018. The mural focused on rising ocean temperatures, acidification of the oceans, rising sea levels and the impact that is causing to sea and land-based animal life in the Bay Area. In my research,I found that purple urchins have proliferated due to the rising sea temperatures. They decimated the coastal kelp between San Francisco and Oregon which has caused all sorts of disorder. In addition, urchins natural predator, sea stars, have been dwindling in number due to the rise of red-tide algae (also caused by the rising temperatures). Long story short: Everything impacts everything. Consider ordering some uni next time and you’ll be supporting the culinary ingenuity that is currently making an attempt to combat the environmental crisis a little bit while sending money down the chain to the urchin divers who are plucking these invasive fellas off the rocks one by one.

The painting was professionally photographed by Almac Camera in order to capture the color accuracy and clarity of the brushwork in amazing detail.
